Mike Johnson hasn't added a story.
Until two years ago Ian Johnson was a healthy, fit and very active, 44 year-old ex-marine, professional arborist and accomplished mountaineer. He was energetic, motivated, fun-loving and funny. Then he suddenly began to experience episodes of atrial fibrillation, a type of heart arrhythmia with potentially serious health consequences. This led to a two year odyssey of declining physical health and emotional well-being with Ian feeling more and more exhausted to the point where he was no longer able to work or even perform minor physical tasks.
His doctors at the V.A. repeatedly tested him and prescribed various treatments. Their initial diagnosis was Obstructive Sleep Apnea for which he was provided a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, but to no avail. They also diagnosed him with a myriad of other health issues for which they prescribed various medications. Nothing has worked and his symptoms have gotten progressively worse. He is now essentially confined to his bed or couch-bound, and is largely unable to do basic household tasks beyond preparing meals. Ian has had no work income since June of 2021, and has exhausted all savings and credit. He is unable to pay his rent or to take care of household expenses, car repairs and insurance, or gas to get to his appointments.
Ian did not qualify for unemployment insurance when he had to stop working, and as a single male adult he is not eligible, or has extremely low priority, for welfare programs. He did apply for Social Security Disability, which was predictably denied after a long wait. He is in the process of appealing, but it could be a year or more before he receives a decision.
In the meantime, Ian continues to seek a diagnosis and treatment for the terrible fatigue which is the overriding problem. However, he needs financial assistance to cover household costs and keep a roof over his head, while he awaits a ruling on his SSDI appeal and seeks other assistance. At present he faces eviction as soon as next month. We have been helping financially as best we can, but as retirees we have limited resources.
Please consider a donation, no matter how small, to help him make it through this crisis. We are hoping to raise $7200 to cover his rent for six months, as we help him pursue medical and financial solutions.
